The oldest settlement on the Opatija Riviera dates back to the 1st century BC, when – according to tradition – the Roman patrician, statesman, general and cartographer Marcus Vipsanius Agrippa chose this place as his residence. Over time, at the spot where Mount Učka descends into the sea, a fortified harbour emerged in which the air is full of the scent of laurel and sea salt: a town on whose stone-paved streets history meets legends.
