Učka Nature Park

The Učka mountain, "bridging" the sea and heaven, has always been at the heart of Opatija's riviera. Records show that its caves were inhabited by our pre-historic ancestors as far as twelve thousand years ago. About a thousand years ago, the Slavic people thought the mountain had mystic powers and began using it as a place of worship. Today its forests still hide its treasures, such as the endemic Campanula tommasiniana and over 1.300 other plant species, unique birds, butterflies and other animals.

The area encompassing Učka, and part of the neighbouring Ćićarija, is a declared nature park and is thus protected. It is managed by the public institution Učka Nature Park, with its headquarters in Liganj. Its role is to ensure the balance between maintaining the biodiversity of Učka and enabling people to come and appreciate the park's uniqueness by opening and maintaining paths for hiking and cycling to the top.
